STERIS raises full-year profit outlook, with tariff refunds part of the lift

Second-quarter earnings of $2.94 a share beat expectations by $0.24, while revenue of $1.59B was only just ahead of the $1.58B expected.

STERIS raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings guidance to $11.35-$11.55 a share, from $11.10-$11.30. The medical equipment and infection-prevention group made the move after a second quarter in which earnings of $2.94 a share beat expectations by $0.24. Revenue of $1.59B compared with $1.58B expected.

Not all of the higher outlook comes from the business itself. The new range includes about $0.18 a share of benefit from tariff refunds received so far this year. President and CEO Dan Carestio said a strong quarter in Life Sciences gave the company the confidence to raise its full-year expectations for that segment, and that the outlook also reflects the refunds.

STERIS also approved an additional restructuring plan. It is expected to cost about $45m, of which $10m is cash, and to produce about $9m of annualized savings from fiscal 2028.

The numbers matter because of what STERIS has taken on. On October 13 it agreed to pay $2.1bn for Xodus Medical, a deal to be financed mostly with debt. Stronger Life Sciences results and the refunds give the company more room to absorb that borrowing. The cost cuts point the same way: management is trimming elsewhere while it buys scale. Taken together, the quarter looks like support for funding Xodus without straining the balance sheet. The acquisition is on course to close by the end of the year.
