German factory index rises to 54.2 in October, as forecast, while services and shoppers weaken

Services slowed and retail sales fell around the manufacturing reading, while money markets price rate rises from the European Central Bank.

Germany's manufacturing purchasing managers' index rose to 54.2 in October, exactly as forecast, which leaves factories as the steadier part of an economy where services and shoppers are weakening. A reading above 50 means activity is growing.

The October figure is up from a final 53.9 for September, according to Trading Economics, citing S&P Global, and it matches the flash estimate published on October 23, FXStreet reported. It settles little, and the surveys around it show why.

The composite index, which adds services to manufacturing, fell to 52.8 from 53.8 against a forecast of 53.4, as services slid to 51.7 from 52.9 in the flash estimate, FXStreet reported.

GfK consumer confidence fell to -30.6 for October against a consensus of -27.4, InvestingLive reported. The Ifo business climate rose to 90.2 against 89.9 expected, a small lift that does not offset the rest.

Factory strength is also less secure than the headline suggests. August orders fell 10.6 per cent against a 1.0 per cent drop expected, although output rose 2 per cent, and the Economy Ministry said on October 14 that the industrial outlook stays subdued.

That mix is awkward for the European Central Bank, because German harmonised inflation rose to 3.3 per cent in September from 2.9 per cent in August and Bundesbank President Nagel has said upside risks to inflation dominate. Money markets price roughly 100 basis points of ECB rate increases by end-2027, InvestingLive reported, a path that would weigh on households already spending less.
