Netanyahu presses Trump to resume Iran strikes once the midterms end, Axios reports

A tense Saturday call left Trump arguing for more time on diplomacy, while the Pentagon has a three-day strike plan ready and Qatari mediators wait on Tehran's answer.

Netanyahu is pressing Trump to resume strikes on Iran immediately after Tuesday's US midterm elections, and Trump wants to give diplomacy more time, Axios reports. An Israeli source called their Saturday phone call "tough"; a US source called it "direct".

The timing is the point. Trump has pledged that the US will not strike Iran before the November 3 election, while leaving the blockade in force. That pledge has capped the risk premium in crude oil since October 8, and it expires in two days. Netanyahu is now asking for action at the moment it does.

The military groundwork is largely done. The Pentagon has drafted a three-day strike plan, after Trump rejected five others. A top admiral has briefed him on attack options, the Wall Street Journal reported, and Fox reported a presidential briefing on military options on Thursday. The Journal also reported that Trump told aides he expects to resume bombing by the end of November. That is a looser horizon than the one Netanyahu is asking for, and the Saturday call suggests the two men are not agreed on it.

The friction matters because both sides had projected a common line of restraint now and options later. Trump has said the US would act alone against Iran, and a senior Iranian security official has said Tehran will not separate Netanyahu from Trump, so any strike would be read in Tehran as a joint one.

Diplomacy has not closed, which is Trump's argument. Foreign Minister Araghchi called the US move to restart talks a positive step but said the blockade must be lifted before Hormuz talks proceed. US envoy Tom Barrack says a deal is very close. Against that, the oil market has the pledge's expiry to price, and Netanyahu's push narrows the distance between rhetoric and a strike order.
