Mitsubishi Heavy to boost U.S. gas turbine production, Nikkei reports

Nikkei Asia says the company will invest $490m in its Georgia factory, as American buyers of gas turbines wait years for delivery.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to build more of its gas turbines inside the US, with Nikkei Asia reporting a $490m investment to add capacity at its Georgia factory for manufacturing and maintenance. Putting more of its output on American soil should help the company compete for US orders.

Nikkei ties the Georgia expansion to rising power demand from data centres, according to Newsquawk's summary of its report. Utilities and data-centre developers are both chasing gas turbines for power that can be switched on when needed, and delivery waits have lengthened by several years.

Demand is already in Mitsubishi Heavy's order book, as its backlog of large gas turbines stood at 35 gigawatts in the first quarter of its 2026 plan, up from 23 gigawatts a year earlier, Utility Dive reported. Nikkei Asia has also reported that the company plans to double its large gas turbine production capacity by fiscal 2030 against 2024 levels.

Nikkei Asia's report gives no output figure or date for the Georgia expansion, so how much it improves the company's position in US orders cannot yet be judged.
